Paris has just delivered a highly successful 2024 Olympics. Yes, there will always be detractors. But I see the event as a massive triumph for sports and humanity's competitive spirit. Chapeau, mes amis!
The US and China once again went head-to-head in the medal table, and no European country could challenge the supremacy of those behemoths. However, add up the medals of the European countries, and Europe comfortably beat the US and China combined.
Seems all is not lost on the sporting grounds.
Not so in the board rooms, however.
Let's look at another league table.
The US has their S&P 100 and us Europeans have our FTSE Eurotop 100. Their 100 best vs. our 100 best (all friendly competition, of course - just like in Paris).
The largest 100 European corporates clock up an impressive $7.6trn of market cap. A decent chunk of change. But compared to the US, it's a minnow, as the S&P100 is worth $34.3trn.
And we are not catching up.
Over the past five years, the European index is up a decent 39%. But the S&P100 is up 99% over the same period.
So it seems we need to get our skates on.
What can be done if we don't want to fall further behind?
We have to innovate. And we have to be better and faster at bringing that innovation to bear at scale. Part of that will be by building great, new technology companies. Another part will be by bringing more innovation faster to the corporates, so they can combine tech with global reach to compete and grow.
On September 2nd, we are bringing 30 of Europe's most innovative tech startups together with 10 of Europe's leading corporates at SuperSaaS. For good measure, we will also have some honorary corporate participants from the US.
To apply as a startup, search for SuperSaaS Accelerator and join us for a day of innovation and inspired dealmaking. Note: it’s pre-Series A only.

2022 was a bit nuts. In startup land, money practically grew on trees. It was growth at all costs. And we all know how that movie ended.
It's human nature to overcorrect. And so the pendulum swung the other way.
Today, we see a lot of disciplined founders. And we investors love it when founders look after the cash. But it shouldn't be to the detriment of achieving growth objectives. Because there is no price for missing plan and keeping you spending in control. Whatever you do, you must grow.
Don't take my word for it. Public market investors are telling us exactly what they are looking for.
If you look at the biggest public SaaS companies, growth is once again the most important thing for valuation. Much more important than Free Cash Flow. In 2023, FCF took centre stage for six months. But growth is once again the thing that decides company valuation multiples.
This isn't as counterintuitive as it might seem. Technology is still a winner-takes-all industry. And once you are the size of Snowflake, Datadog or Atlassian, you have plenty of opportunities to make money. But the only way to get that big is to grow. So grow, you must.
This brings me back to the beginning. We are not going back to the ZIRP era of "growth at all costs." But if you have to choose between hitting your cost plan but missing revenue growth or meeting revenue growth and going a little bit above the cost plan, the latter wins.
So there is your license to spend (a bit) more. As long as you hit your growth plan.
