Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Shippax Ferry Conference onboard Grimaldi Group vessel, where industry leaders and innovators gathered to discuss the most pressing issues and opportunities in the maritime sector.
The core topics revolved around how the industry can shift to alternative fuels and enhancing vessel efficiency. Given the high cost of alternative fuels and the growing demand for green energy sources, it's clear that minimizing energy consumption is crucial.
Shipowners and naval architects are doing great job designing even up to 40% more efficient vessels, and groundbreaking innovations such as Norsepower wind propulsion, Silverstream Technologies air lubrication, and high-performance hull coatings are becoming standard in newbuild specifications and retrofits. It is also great to see that GIT (Graphite Innovation & Technologies) has demonstrated remarkable results in enhancing vessel efficiency with its graphene-based coatings, which are among these innovative solutions that help the shipping industry become more sustainable.
Although I believe alternative fuels like hydrogen will be widely used in the future and the smoke evaporating from ships might be replaced by water steam, this conference served as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to improve vessel efficiency 🌍
