Mairi Clark

Trying to make a difference

Mairi Clark is the Falls Prevention Practitioner for North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, covering acute, community, out-patients, and a prison across the entire county.1 She qualified as a Podiatrist in 2009 from Glasgow Caledonian University and is currently the first and only podiatrist undertaking the role of Falls Prevention Practitioner in the UK.1

Mairi is actively involved in several professional networks and committees:

  • Member of the National Falls Network
  • Member of the North East Regional Falls Task Group
  • Member of the National Harm Free Care Network
  • Member and representative of the Royal College of Podiatry on the PHE National Falls Prevention Coordination Group1

In her role, Mairi has been instrumental in implementing fall prevention strategies. She has noted that the use of tools like 'RITA' (Reminiscence Interactive Therapy Activities) has helped reduce falls rates significantly in hospital wards.3 Mairi is also a member of the National Falls Practitioner Working Group and has described RITA as a "great tool for creating good communication with patients".3

Her work contributes to the broader efforts in falls prevention, which is a critical issue in healthcare, particularly for older adults. Multifactorial interventions, like those Mairi likely implements in her role, have been shown to potentially reduce the rate of falls in community-dwelling older people.2
