The management and impact of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients who are either living with it or at risk of developing it has been a hot topic at this year’s European Society of Cardiology (ESC) congress, with the presentation earlier today of new ESC guidelines on the management of ACS. This is an area where Sanofi has been proud to support the community in applying guidelines in a routine setting. As we’ve seen over the last five years through the Sanofi initiated and supported ACS Pathway Optimisation Project / ACS EuroPath initiative, building a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care, supported by education, technology, and more effective communication, can help more post-ACS patients live healthier life. Having these parameters in mind and using simple quality indicators and treatment protocols like the ones proposed by the ACS Pathway Optimisation Project / ACS EuroPath teams, treatment centers can implement solutions that improve outcomes for their patients while remaining pragmatic and practical. As a clinician, I am also mindful about the people who haven’t experienced an ACS event yet, but who might be at an increased risk of suffering one, based on existing conditions, such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes and of course, dyslipidemia, among other factors. Helping these people improving the state of their underlying diseases could play an important role in preventing a first ACS event. This is the kind of approach that makes me proud to be part of the European cardiology community, and proud to work for Sanofi. We’re determined to improve outcomes for patients recovering from serious cardiovascular events and we won’t rest until we succeed at this mission.
