Hello LinkedIn network, apologies for not posting much this year. These past few months, I have been busy lining up new work ventures that I can now share. First, I recently started as the Director of Program Management, AI Safety at MLCommons, an organization with the mission to make “AI better for everyone.” ML Commons specializes in creating AI benchmarks and public datasets, and recently released an AI safety proof of concept tool. I know my network is acutely aware of the societal risks and opportunities of emerging AI and ML technologies, so I won’t use this post to capture an exhaustive list. Instead, I’ll say that I’ve had the chance to connect to several people at ML Commons. The organization brings not only immense expertise in a wide range of AI / ML technologies, but a deep sense of realism and urgency when it comes to mitigating possible social harms. I’m eager to dive deep into the work and equally importantly, learn as much as I can. A huge thanks to Rebecca Weiss and Peter Mattson for bringing me on.

Second, I will soon be starting a part-time, year-long fellowship with Zuzanna Warso and others at Open Future Foundation. I'll be exploring the economic impact of digital public infrastructure and the digital commons in Europe. This work will inform a bigger project I have mulled over with several people in my network about the economic implications of AI / ML.

Lastly, I'll be supporting Rumi Chunara's great work at NYU's Center for Health Data Science over the next year. Thanks to William Brinson Weeks, MD, PhD, MBA and Jose Pagan for the connection.

After a year of working directly for the UN again, these new roles will move me away from tech for international development efforts. I will do my best to keep making videos and staying connected with my social sector network to share relevant lessons learned. As always, I’m available for speaking gigs and short advising efforts. And if you want to partner with, donate to or otherwise collaborate with ML Commons, please DM me. I’ll make sure you get connected to the right person.

Stock prices are up, morale is down, and layoffs have persisted in the tech industry. Through the uncertainty so many of us feel about the state of the world, I hope 2024 is the year we see a meaningful investment increase in Responsible AI and AI for Social Good. For that to happen, many more people must understand what those concepts mean. So, I made another video. I used a few major social science frameworks to explain both. If you feel so compelled, please share this post with your LinkedIn networks, and like the video and follow my channel on YouTube. Don't hesitate to reach out if you'd like to chat.
