Was texting with the founder of a telehealth startup.

Them: “Do you have any lists or anything that a marketing agency would need to see in a biz plan? Just trying to be proactive so whatever we’re building won’t have a bunch of holes to backfill when the time comes.”

First of all, god bless you.

Second, rolls up sleeves here’s a top-of-mind list of things I’m always looking for in a prospective client’s “we need an agency” brief:

  1. Clear value proposition (or at least a strong hypothesis on this). What does the product/service deliver better than any other similar offering? What makes it special/different? Why should the audience care?

  2. Proof points that back up the value proposition. Why should anyone believe you when you say you do these things better than your competition?

  3. Clear goals and objectives. You want this investment to achieve what, to what degree, by when? And what are the stakes? If we achieve all this, what will it make possible? If we don’t achieve this, what pain will that bring?

  4. How will success be measured? You need to establish a fair and reasonable standard by which to judge performance. We want to know what’s most important to you, and whether or not your vision is achievable.

  5. Clear idea of your desired customer audience(s) backed by data if possible. (We can also help flesh this out.) Plus, any other helpful audience detail. For example, where do you see the most value coming from?

  6. Any existing research. Please do share whatever you may have on your audience, competitive landscape, etc. Despite what some of your more jaded peers may have told you, we really don’t want to reinvent the wheel if we don’t have to. We want the best, most informed jumping off point.

  7. Any historical performance data we can benchmark against to guide investment levels and help assess overall feasibility. For example, did you run a pilot campaign? How did that do? What did you learn?

  8. A committed and available budget with room for agency fee, paid media spend, and any production or OOP costs we may need. Let us recommend a realistic breakdown of these things to get the best end result for you. It’s always more helpful to hear “here’s my comfort zone, you tell me if what I want is possible within that” vs. “I want to spend 80% in paid media.”

  9. An outline of the decision makers, key stakeholders, and any other points of contact (including other agency partners, if you’ve got a roster). We're happy to collaborate as needed, we just like clear swim lanes.

  10. If you're running a competitive review, your agency selection criteria including any must-haves or deal breakers. Strategic proposals and pitch processes can be a heavy investment for the agency, so please be upfront about your wish list before you ask us to make that investment.

Agencies, what else do you love to see in a brief? 👇
