Let’s be brutally honest, hoteliers. Traditionally, accessibility in hotel rooms has been an afterthought in our industry. Instead of designing beautiful hotel rooms and then hastily adding some extra space and grab bars to fit the bare minimum standards for an accessible room, as so many other folks do, we put accessibility at the forefront of our design when we renovated Hotel Zed Victoria.
Tanelle Bolt from RAD Society acted as a paid advisor on this project, and we brought her in to look at our architectural plans before any work was done to ensure we wouldn’t be limited by the building!
Here are some of the things I’m proud of with our accessible rooms at Hotel Zed Victoria:
***Tanelle recommended we have an adjustable hand held shower that fits on a standard L-shaped grab bar. Nothing is commercially available so we commissioned custom 3-D printed mounting attachments.
***We learned that an unfortunate standard practices for folks that use shower benches in hotels is to pile towels onto them to make them comfortable. We invested in super comfy, padded benches to make that experience relaxing for everyone!
***Ensuring our accessible rooms have connecting doors to non-accessible rooms to make it easier if you’re traveling with a support person but still want your own privacy.
***We fully replaced our sidewalks in front of our accessible units to make entering and exiting the units easier.
***High and low towel bars, wall hooks, grab bars throughout the entire room.
We always want to get better and better. What accessibility options do you look for when you’re booking a hotel room?!
