Prof. Manuel J. Blanco is a distinguished solar researcher and engineer with more than thirty years of dedicated experience in the field of Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST) technologies. His expertise spans various key areas, including Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Optics, and the Modelling of Energy Systems. His career highlights include holding prominent positions such as being a Full Professor and European Research Area (ERA) Chair in Solar Thermal Technologies at the Cyprus Institute’s Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC). In addition to his academic role, Prof. Blanco is also the Chair of the Executive Committee of SolarPACES, which operates under the umbrella of the International Energy Agency, focusing on the promotion of solar thermal power technologies and the solar-assisted manufacturing of fuels and chemicals.
Throughout his illustrious career, Prof. Blanco has held significant leadership roles that impact the solar energy sector notably. Until August 2016, he served as the Science Leader of the Solar Energy Systems Research Group at CSIRO, Australia’s National Research Agency. He directed the Australian Solar Thermal Research Initiative (ASTRI), a major eight-year, eighty-seven million dollar research initiative aimed at enhancing the cost competitiveness of CST technologies. This initiative brought together experts from CSIRO, six Australian universities, and several prestigious US National Laboratories and universities, highlighting Prof. Blanco's ability to unite diverse teams focused on the advancement of solar energy technologies.
In Spain, he has contributed as the Director of the Solar Thermal Energy Department at CENER, the National Renewable Energy Centre.
