Why is it that images of empowered women get so much backlash in the American media landscape? And who should decide what is deemed “acceptable content” for brands?
Yes, I am referring to Swehl’s Times Square billboard — or should I say “Breastgate” — featuring cookbook author Molly Baz with her gorgeous pregnant belly on display, lactation cookies placed over her breasts, and the tagline “Just ad milk.”
(Important to note she was also wearing a white cardigan and what appears to “boyshort” style underwear).
Someone at Clear Channel (or perhaps a group of decision-makers) deemed the billboard “inappropriate” — a campaign that was literally created to celebrate breastfeeding moms. And let me tell you…. breastfeeding moms should be celebrated. It is the most physically challenging thing I have ever done, and I am a life-long athlete. It is sleep-depriving and non-stop exhausting.
Why is it okay for brands to consistently sexualize women to sell underwear, fragrance, luxury goods, etc. (American Apparel, Calvin Klein, Victoria’s Secret) but not okay to feature an empowered pregnant woman?
