Edward Martinez is finally FREE!!!

Edward was first my student in the DC Jail in 2018, and then he became a program participant of Marty Tankleff’s and my Making an Exoneree class in the 2020 cohort, and our client soon thereafter. Most importantly, he is a dear friend and I could not be happier to see him reunited with his beautiful family, including his five children.

I’m also so happy for, and proud of, my former Georgetown students Cecily Burge, Johnsenia Brooks, and Austin Riddick, who have already achieved something that most seasoned lawyers can only dream of. They dedicated themselves for over four years to helping to enable and support Edward’s freedom, and it finally arrived on May 24, 2024 – literally on the 21st birthday of Edward’s daughter named Freedom.

Edward spent nearly 20 years in prison for a murder nobody ever believed or argued he committed. He agreed to be released on a time-served sentence in exchange for not pursuing the myriad Brady claims that resulted in his wrongful conviction.

Edward speaks so beautifully and inspirationally: “The tree of patience is bitter, but its fruit is so sweet.” On the day of his resentencing, he also told his judge, “Hate put me in prison, and love got me out.”

Please join us in welcoming Edward home, where he should have been for the past 19 years, 11 months, and 24 days, by sharing or donating to the GoFundMe if you can. Any contribution you make to supporting Edward is an investment in a truly amazing person – and your support to his success will help him make the world a better place, which he already does every day.
