Highlights
I enjoyed speaking with Amanda O'Brien at The American Lawyer about the path to equity partnership and the role of equity partners in law firms. As I discussed with Amanda, once law firms started operating more as businesses, they realized that there should be a premium placed on equity ownership. One didn’t attain it just from sticking around long enough, billing hours and doing sufficient client work.
To be an owner, one had to generate business for the firm, train and mentor the next generation, contribute to firm leadership and management and continue to be personally productive.
The role of non-equity partners continues to evolve over time, but the non-equity partner years are a great time to:
✅ Build your book of business and develop a reliable network of referral sources; ✅ Grow, lead, manage and mentor your team; ✅ Participate in leadership and management training to understand the business of law and what it means to be an owner in a law firm; and ✅ Find ways to contribute to the overall management of the firm.
The non-equity partner, counsel and other roles are also providing different paths to success for attorneys who, because of their niche areas of substantive specialty or life situations, are not on/do not want to be on an equity partnership track.
Many firms are still dealing with the remaining cadre of equity partners from the “old days” when equity was doled out more freely to lawyers, some of whom would not be considered for equity partnership today.
Lawyer roles in law firms continue to evolve – hopefully, in a positive way.
As always, I welcome your feedback!

So very grateful to be included in this list of industry leaders.
I was fortunate to work with the leading thinkers in legal strategy as a young buck and even more inspired about what is to come. The next generation of legal leaders brings so much promise.
Kudos to my colleagues. It’s an honor to work together. Let’s do this.
Thank you Lawdragon.
