Tips for Pipeline Management and Generation

Sales is a numbers game. Every day you are either looking to win a new lead, or nurture the ones you already have and get them to commit. Your focus as an SDR is to overcome the hardships and maintain consistency in your pipeline generation and management.

Pipeline management is the process of tracking and managing potential customers or leads from the moment they enter your sales funnel until they convert into paying customers.

How to manage your pipeline effectively:

  • Review your numbers: Start with forecast preparation by looking at the numbers you're calling.
  • Identify stalling deals: These are the deals that keep going round and round in circles, or you’ve just been ghosted. Identify them and create a plan to address them or cut them loose.
  • Focus on winnable deals: Use your data to determine promising deals and channel your efforts there to close them.
  • Multi-thread deals: Multi-threading is simply developing relationships with multiple decision-makers in the same company to improve your odds of winning. Determine which deals need multi-threading and take action.
  • Qualify out: Decide which deals are weak and disengage. You can even send out a qualify-out email.

If you do pipeline management well, it leads to pipeline generation.

Pipeline generation simply put is the process of creating a pipeline of opportunities, i.e., filling your pipeline.

Ways to effectively do pipeline generation

  • Calculate activity metrics: Numbers don’t lie. Your data is the best source of insight as to what activity metrics you need to follow. For example what channels are producing better results for outreach?
  • Block time for outreach: Schedule dedicated time on your calendar for cold calls, emails, and LinkedIn outreach.
  • Prepare a good prospect list: Ensure you have a well-researched and up-to-date list of prospects for quality outreach.
  • Start early: Hit the phones early, even when others might not be calling.
  • Take full control: Remember, you can control 100% of this stage - if you want it badly enough, no excuses!

Make it a daily habit

Don’t let the monotony and the rejection that comes with prospecting make you want to give up. When it gets hard, that is precisely the time to keep pushing on and stand out from the noise. Remember, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Set yourself ambitious goals and targets and use them as a motivation to keep going.

Salespeople Are Just Like Doctors... 👩🏻‍⚕️

Picture this: You have gone to the doctor with some terrible pain that needs addressing. After a 45-minute consultation with you explaining all your problems, the doctor asks: “So, what do you think we should do?”

You’d be pissed (I know I would) because, naturally, you expect the doctor to offer guidance, make the right prescription, and just take that pain away!

As a Sales Rep, the relationship with your prospects can also be likened to this doctor-patient relationship. When the prospects share with you their painpoints and wishes, they expect that, as the expert, you will hear them out, make a diagnosis, and give them a fitting solution.

So here’s what you do:

Listen to their problems with empathy

Pay attention to all the details they are sharing to get a good perspective. The objective is to get a deeper understanding of their painpoints.

Educate and inform

Just as doctors inform patients about their conditions and advise them on treatment options, so should you as an SDR. Help them understand why they are in their current situation, then, provide options available that suit their situation. This is the point where you detail the specifics and value of all the available options.

Prescribe the right solutions

After diagnosing their condition, now match it with customised and personalised solutions that address their unique challenges and pains and ask if they agree. You can even ask something like “ Based on XYZ, I’d recommend ABC; are you in alignment?”

Offering generalised solutions and a one-fits-all approach is a no-no. It tells the prospect that you have not listened to what they said. Instead, consider their uniqueness and incorporate that into your offering. Make the process as engaging as possible by asking questions like; “Do you agree?” or “What questions come to mind so far?”

There's more. Your patient (prospect) expects that you will:

Be ethical. They trust that what you promise is what you will deliver.

Practice confidentiality. Whatever information they share with you, they trust you will treat it as private unless they ask you to share it (as in the case of a case study or testimonial).

Demonstrate expertise. Patients are bound to trust doctors who have the data to back their expertise. For you, this will be successful use cases and case studies that are similar to the situation your prospect is in. Additionally, you need to build on your skill level as an SDR through continuous learning so you have even more value to offer your prospects.

Now, go forth and be the best doctor you can be. 🩺
