Highlights
The Resolution Foundation reported today that people in their 20s are now more likely to be off work due to ill health than those in early 40s. This is significant because historically, older people are more likely to be unable to work due to ill health than younger people and the cause was physical rather than mental health.
It is also why applying Population Health Management (#PHM) approaches to getting people back into work could work really well. It would help to truly understand what people within specific cohorts need, drilling into the data about the approximately 2.5m people who are not working due to ill health, and to develop targeted support for them.
PHM has tested approaches to bringing together primary & secondary care clinicians, Local Authority colleagues, social prescribers, and the voluntary sector to create a holistic support system for individuals enabling them to lead better, happier lives, which for many includes meaningful employment.
The Covid Vaccines programme used these approaches to engage people with low trust in government, something that DWP also has to deal with when supporting people to get back to work. Meeting people where they are is what worked for vaccinations, which included bringing services closer to home, working with community leaders, and making every contact count. The same could work well for getting people back into work.
As the joint #DWP / #DHSC Work and Health Unit look to introduce #WorkWell vanguards led by Integrated Care Boards there is an amazing opportunity to embed Population Health Management at scale to tackle the wider determinants of health.
