The group phase is over, what now?

If you have interacted with me in the past couple of weeks (or months), you most likely heard me talking about the World Cup. Last year I worked on a paper for World Cup predictions and it became a minor obsession of mine. I decided to both put this paper out into the world and to re-simulate my predictions for 2022.

My first goal here is to put out there the probabilities for the knockout stages based on my simulation. Brazil is still the favorite one to take the championship (O HEXA VEM?).

The second goal is to talk about the group phase. I was also surprised by Germany and Belgium's losses, come on, none of us saw this coming (although, as a Brazilian, I was quite happy). And that is why I wanted to shed light on how we can use probabilities to set our expectations around matches. Those losses were surprising, but not impossible.

And, finally, my third goal is to open the discussion around how conditional probabilities are important when having this sort of prediction. For instance, maybe Brazil won 55% of the time when playing France in the final, but what is the probability that Brazil reaches the final in the first place? I talk more about this in the paper (which I added to this medium post here https://lnkd.in/gyaBd4PM!) and how we can use the Poisson Regressions and the Monte Carlo simulations of the tournament to have these conditional probabilities.

A couple of weeks ago I did a talk about it during Resilia Conecta, a conference organized by Resilia Educação, and you can find the Portuguese recording on Youtube (https://lnkd.in/gFY8XWpb)!
