Maria Martha Chavez Brumell is a distinguished applied sociologist whose impactful career has been dedicated to the fields of social policy and educational reform. Currently, Dr. Chavez serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Director of Field Operations for Catch the Next, Inc., a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing college readiness and improving college completion rates. In her role, she oversees every aspect of planning, institutional engagement, and implementation of the ASCENDER program (previously known as Dream Catchers) in colleges across Texas. Beyond her administrative duties, she leads the research and evaluation team, organizes professional development institutes, oversees a peer mentoring program, and curates monthly webinars and a Journal of Ideas and Pedagogy.

Dr. Chavez’s academic journey is equally impressive. She earned her Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Sociology from Yale University, following her Master’s of Philosophy in Sociology/Social Change and Sociology of Medicine at the same prestigious institution. Additionally, she holds a Master’s degree in Education, specializing in Curriculum and Instruction/Reading from Kansas State University, where she also completed her Bachelor’s degree, with a triple major in Journalism, Psychology, and Spanish Literature.
Throughout her career, Dr. Chavez has been actively involved in educational initiatives aimed at serving underserved populations. Among her many achievements, she founded the LULAC Head Start Program in New Haven, Connecticut, and directed and secured funding for a Latino Youth Center in New Haven. Her insight as a principal investigator and community organizer for Save the Children Federation's Campaign for America's Forgotten Children was pivotal in establishing five community learning centers in California's Central Valley.

Dr. Chavez's impressive career path has seen her take on numerous influential roles. She previously served as the Assistant Dean of Yale College and played a vital role as a member of the faculty and Director of Minority Admissions at Kansas State University. In these capacities, she focused on enhancing minority representation in higher education, laying the groundwork for future generations of scholars. Her previous positions include Special Assistant to the Dean of Students at Yale University and Chief Education Officer/Director of Operations for Catch The Next, Inc., where she made significant strides in educational outreach and community engagement.
