Last week, I lost my father unexpectedly. He was only 62 years old. While he had been battling severe health challenges for the past year, his passing still came as a shock. As his primary caretaker during this time, I witnessed an incredible display of strength, patience, and resilience.
My dad was an extraordinary man who touched countless lives. As a Black father raising two Black children, he instilled in us an unwavering belief in our worth and capabilities, even in a world that often seemed not made for our success. His quiet courage showed up not just in hospital rooms and in the face of adversity, but in everyday moments of fatherhood.
He was a master of friendship, always there for others, sending motivational texts, cheering from sidelines, and treating his friends' families as his own. His approach to life was fearless and optimistic, often leaving those who loved him in awe (and sometimes terror) of his "no sharks in beautiful water" attitude.
Above all, my father excelled at loving people - generously, consistently, honestly, and unconditionally. He wanted nothing more than to know others were happy, their children were loved, and that they knew he was there, no matter what. In our last conversation, he expressed feeling overwhelmed by the love surrounding him. It brings me comfort to know that in his final days, he felt so deeply loved and appreciated.
Grief is hitting in waves, but I keep finding Dad in the small moments - in sunrises, perfect tennis weather, and the love surrounding us. Dad's absence is profound, but so is the love he left behind. I will spend the rest of my life trying to love as Dad loved me, honoring the gift he was to this world - one to be unwrapped again and again.
I am deeply grateful for my team at Adobe, especially TB Bardlavens, Akshita Goyal, and Spencer Stultz, M.A., for giving me the space and time to take care of my dad during his last year, and continues to support me in the days and weeks after his passing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
