A couple of weeks ago, during Europe's Deeptech Meetup, I had the pleasure of moderating a round table on deeptech financing with Michel de Lempdes, Alain Pujol and Alexandre Laing.

The key insights from this session?

Continued large investments in Deeptech

Although there has been a decline in deeptech investment volume and value— Alexandre Laing attributes this to the general interest rate context—he highlights that significant mega rounds in deeptech (over €100M) are still occurring, citing examples such as Mistral AI, Verkor, H Company and Electra.

This underscores the importance of events like the Europe Deeptech Meetup, organized by Les Deeptech 🚀 and EuroQuity - Bpifrance which focus on helping early-stage deeptech startups secure funding.

Alain Pujol from France Angels notes that 2023 was a record year for France Angels with €73.7 million invested in 441 operations, an increase of €10.7 million from the previous year. He confirms, however, business angels have been resilient, providing more bridge funding. He points out that roughly 20% of France Angels' investments go into deeptech companies and believes 2024 should be a good year, partly due to Paul Midy's upcoming fiscal measures.

International insights for context

Michel de Lempdes emphasizes the significance of monitoring trends in the US, as it often sets the stage for global developments. In 2022, deeptech companies in the US raised $34 billion. However, in 2023, this figure was halved if we exclude the substantial contribution from OpenAI. With OpenAI's $10 billion included, the total funding remains roughly the same.

In Europe, specifically France and Germany, the combined deeptech funding for 2023 was $7 billion, with France raising $5 billion and Germany $2 billion. While it's too early to make definitive statements about 2024, the trend appears to be flat. The outlook for 2024 seems challenging, but there is optimism for a recovery in 2025.

Deeptech investment criteria

Investors focus on strong teams capable of solving large-scale problems (composed of researchers, engineers and sales team) and deploying internationally, targeting projects at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6.
