Highlights
Last week Nicole Bernhard, M.Ed., and I had the privilege of joining a fantastic group at the Community Counseling Centers of Chicago for Mental Health First Aid Training, courtesy of the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.
This experience reinforced my passion for integrating mental health awareness into every facet of my work. Together, we can create environments where everyone feels supported, understood, and empowered. 💚

Campaigns are job interviews. Months and months of interviewing with hundreds and thousands of new bosses that you will hopefully be serving. Imagine that one job you interviewed for that had 6 rounds of interviews and multiply it by 1,000...10,000...more.
Tonight I got to interview a candidate that is really special. Caroline Menjivar is running for CA State Senate, District 20. She is a progressive candidate, a veteran, a child of immigrants from El Salvador, has a degree in social work, and most importantly a dedicated member of the San Fernando Valley community.
During our conversation tonight on Women Crush Wednesday - Politics and Power we talked about:
- How her diverse background and experience have helped her build a broad coalition
- Imposter syndrome and the beauty of the moments when you realize all the work was worth it (like when you are endorsed by the LA Times!!)
- Environmental justice and how having multiple airports in her district has negatively impacted the health of many of her neighbors.
Her passion came through and when she talked about her identity as a progressive and a veteran I got chills.
"You shouldn't look at Veterans as a monolith. We are very diverse and I think having a progressive, veteran in office is something people should watch out for. Because a progressive veteran is never ever going to stand down from a fight against corporations, (or) against special interest."
I guess the point of this post is to say, I am so impressed by the resilience and endurance of candidates like Caroline Menjivar and I am glad that I met people like Ebony Murphy-Root, Cyndi Otteson and Sarah Izzo who are actively participating in the interview process and teaching me in the process.
Watch the conversation here! (Head to minute 13 for some great content)
