😬Crunch time😬

When it comes to business, there are many different types of people - those that like to cruise at their own pace, those that thrive under pressure, those that cannot take the heat and those that simply take things in their stride, to name just a few!

We all have different personality types, and learning to cope with stress and the challenges we face on a daily basis is so important to our mental health, and the overall delivery and quality of the output we provide.

For me, I often replay the “stressed when busy and stressed when quiet” scenarios in my head. But to be honest with you, as my business has grown, I have felt a lot more comfortable in the “stressed when busy” mindset as opposed to the “stressed when quiet” mindset - both allow my mind to wonder, but I find the stressed when busy mindset actually helps me to think more clearly as I work out how to solve issues quickly and succinctly.

As we go into the Easter weekend, I often question how I can take some time out given everything I have on my plate.

For many startups, there is no such thing as a public holiday or time out. While I don’t operate a startup, I do operate a business that requires my undivided attention and this means always meeting my client expectations and deadlines.

I do think it is important to take time out and switch off, but it is equally important to manage your workload and find ways to deliver, even if you take you foot off the gas for a bit. Whether it means working different hours, or dedicating some time over the weekend to get stuff done, remember that when it’s crunch time, you need to find a way!

So my Startip as we approach this Easter long weekend is to plan ahead. If you are running a business, there’s always going to be a crunch time, so plan in advance and make sure you are well equipped to get sh*t done without sacrificing some of that personal time you owe to yourself!

🙏🏼Understanding your client’s needs🙏🏼

Generally, when I advise my clients, I tend to focus on the key legal aspects of the project from both a legal and a commercial point of view.

Having worked in-house as Legal Director for Monster Energy for several years, I learnt to focus on getting to the route of an issue rather than providing long-winded advice merely for the sake of increasing my billable hours. Getting straight to the point when dealing with C-Suite executives that were time poor, was key to being a good lawyer.

So these days, when I advise my clients, and in particular startups, I make sure I fully understand the project timelines and deadlines that need to be met.

That is why, in my experience, understanding the structure and objective of each client I work with not only guarantees a strong relationship built on transparency and trust, but also ensures I only provide the services I genuinely believe they need at that point in time.

So today's Startip is simple - learn to see through your customer’s or client's eyes, so you can understand what they both want and need, without adding all the fluff that goes with it.

Simplicity is key. Identify the issue and work out strategically the best and most efficient way to solve it.
