Dr. Mark Maloney is a Professor and Co-Chair in the Department of Biology at Spelman College. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He also completed postdoctoral research at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Dr. Maloney teaches courses such as Immunology, Parasitology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, and General Biology at Spelman College.123

His research focuses on the immune system, particularly B cell development and the cellular functions of the glycosphingolipid Gb3 (CD77), which serves as a receptor for Shiga toxins. His studies explore Gb3's roles in apoptosis pathways, cell adhesion, and interferon signal transduction in B lymphocytes and Burkitt lymphoma cells.13 Dr. Maloney has published extensively on these topics and has contributed chapters to books on chromatography and microbiology.3

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Maloney has served on numerous committees at Spelman College, including roles related to curriculum revision, tenure and promotion, and research ethics. He has also been involved in externally funded programs like NIH/RIMI and NSF/SISTERS.3
