I've been a member of the service call team at LSI since 2015. There is a special sense of fulfillment that comes from taking on a challenge short notice and providing a solution quickly. LSI is expanding our ability to meet these kind of needs. This is the ultimate problem solvers role! Check it out.

I rarely post here but I figured it was a good time for a new picture, an update, and an encouragement.

In my free time over the last four years I’ve been quietly studying a field far-removed from controls engineering—human nutrition & dietetics.

Pursuing a field of study out of pure passion has been one of the best things I’ve done for myself as an adult and I am indebted to my wife for encouraging me to formally begin this journey. I stopped binging nutrition podcasts and enrolled in an online ACEND-accredited human nutrition program. (For my engineer followers, ACEND is to dietetics what ABET is to engineering.)

I've taken courses on Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Biostatistics, Foodservice Management, Medical Nutrition Therapy, Food Science, Nutrition Counseling/Behavior Change, and even a timely course on Maternal & Infant Nutrition (My wife and I are expecting our 2nd child in August!).

Along the way I’ve rediscovered my love of reading and developed a deep appreciation for epistemology and the scientific method. As someone profoundly vulnerable to cynicism, the material on human behavior change has been particularly inspiring. Check out "Motivational Interviewing" by Rollnick & Miller for more info on this topic.

One of my courses requires me to spend several weeks working directly with Registered Dietitians. So I took the month of June off and have been spending the last few weeks shadowing some incredible RDs at the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center here in Memphis, Tennessee. After four years watching lectures, reading textbooks, writing research papers (anyone curious about Fructose’s impact on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease?), and responding to classmates BlackBoard posts, I’ve been elated to don scrubs and round with a medical team. Scrubs are way more comfortable than steel-toed boots, hard hats, & fire-resistant clothing, by the way.

I’m not sure how many PLC programmers/controls engineers have studied human nutrition at the graduate level. If you know of any send them my way. I’ve gotten used to the looks I get when I tell people what I’ve been up to on nights and weekends. Haha.

But this is my encouragement to you: If there is a stone you’ve felt you left unturned, go turn it over! It doesn’t have to “make sense on paper” for you to do it.
