Mark Patterson

Mark Patterson is a distinguished academic and researcher, currently serving as a Professor of Marine & Environmental Sciences and Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University since 2013.

He is also the Fulbright Research Chair on Advancing Transdisciplinary Research on the Changing North at Université Laval for the academic year 2021-2022.

Patterson has a rich background in academia and administration, having been the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Affairs in the College of Science at Northeastern University from July 2018 to September 2020.

He holds the position of Chief Technology Officer at the Global Resilience Institute at Northeastern University since 2017 and is a Core Faculty Member at the Coastal Sustainability Institute and an Affiliated Member at the Institute for Experiential Robotics, both at Northeastern University.

As the Principal Investigator of the Field Robotics Laboratory at the Marine Science Center, Northeastern University (Nahant, MA) since 2013, Patterson leads cutting-edge research initiatives.

Prior to joining Northeastern University, Mark Patterson served as the Director of the Autonomous Systems Laboratory and held positions as Associate and Full Professor of Marine Science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William & Mary (1992-2013).

His entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found Sias Patterson, Inc., where he also served as the Chief Technology Officer and Vice President. The company specialized in manufacturing Autonomous Underwater Vehicles from 1996 to 2005.

Patterson's academic journey began as an Assistant and Associate Professor in the Division of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Davis from 1986 to 1992. Before that, he was an Instructor in the Department of Biology at Northeastern University.

Mark Patterson has received several prestigious awards and honors, including the 2018 Outstanding Innovation Award at Northeastern University, the 2014 Explorers Club Flag Award for Mission 31, and the 2014 Service Award from the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).

His contributions to ocean science and engineering were recognized with the 2008 Lockheed Martin Award for Excellence and the 2006 Antarctic Service Medal from the National Science Foundation, among other accolades.

Patterson is a highly educated individual with a Ph.D., A.M., and A.B. in Biology from Harvard University. His expertise and experience span various institutions, where he has held key positions in research, academia, and technology development.
