Highlights
Part personal story, part PSA ...
2 weeks ago I was experiencing some weirdness in my left eye. I had had cataract surgery 2 months prior and knew that it took several weeks for things to feel normal again, so I attributed it to that. Then over a couple day period it went from weird (floaters maybe?) to weirder - it felt like a sort of black disc in the corner of my eye that definitely wasn't getting smaller.
So I called my surgeon that did the cataract surgery hoping to see him. The office informed me that it sounded like a "retinal emergency" and they referred me to a retinal specialist and I luckily got an appointment with them a few hours later. A few hours after that I'm being wheeled into surgery for a retinal detachment. They surmised that if I had waited as little as a day more I would have lost sight in the eye permanently. I didn't get hit or fall, I wasn't in pain, and it was unrelated to the cataract surgery. Apparently it's just one of these things that happen.
The tl;dr is that I'm fine. I'm expected to get 100% of my vision back. 10 days of modified bed rest where I was lying on my side almost 24/7, and a missed European vacation because I couldn't fly, were minor annoyances compared to the alternative.
All this to say that if there's something going on with you that seems even a bit off, whether with your eye, body, or mind, get it checked out, talk to someone. etc. You never know.
I've always strived for and believed in work/life balance. In retrospect I have as of late been a little too out of balance in favor of the latter and as such am making a more concerted effort towards the former - can only ski/golf/travel so much and I'm not getting noticeably better at the first two!
So, time to get serious. I'm looking for my next professional adventure, whether it be in a full-time, contract, or advisory capacity. Can potentially contribute to an organization in any/all of the following ways:
-Business development. Not only have I had many successful top performing years in hunting roles across the payments and SaaS worlds, but as a consultant to the payments industry I also leveraged this success in engagements that involved training client facing teams at financial institutions on sales strategy and effectiveness.
-B2B payments thought leadership. Through my consulting experience I have been asked to share my expertise via chairing conferences and moderating panels at industry leading events across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
-People leadership. I have enjoyed being in a position to develop other leaders throughout my career. Relatedly, please note the Recommendations from former direct reports on my LinkedIn profile.
I would love to contribute to your, or anyone in your network's, success, do some great things, and have a laugh or two along the way.
I am grateful for all of you in my professional network, especially those who have given me support and counsel. I hope I'm your first call if you need anything professionally or personally.
