Mark Spalding is a highly respected marine conservation scientist with 30 years of experience in the field. He is known for his global perspective on oceans and coasts, specializing in large-scale syntheses and publications like the World Atlas series. Mark has collaborated with partners worldwide to assess coastal biodiversity and conservation efforts, particularly focusing on coral reef science in the Indian Ocean.

Currently serving as the Senior Marine Scientist at The Nature Conservancy's Global Ocean Team, Mark's work revolves around ecosystem services valuation and supporting research teams globally. He also holds the role of Chief Science Advisor to the government of the British Indian Ocean Territory, overseeing marine protected areas.

In academia, Mark is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge's Department of Zoology while being based at the Department of Physical, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Siena, Italy. He has authored significant publications like the World Atlas of Coral Reefs, World Atlas of Mangroves, and Atlas of Ocean Wealth among others. His research papers cover topics ranging from mangrove tourism to marine conservation strategies in the face of climate change.

Mark's educational background includes a PhD in Biogeography and an MA in Natural Sciences (Zoology) from the University of Cambridge.
