Mark Tracy

Mark Tracy is a Professor of the Practice in Sustainable Finance and Investing at Brown University's Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES).23 He joined IBES as core faculty in the summer of 2024, becoming Brown's first professor of sustainable finance and investing.12

Tracy is a Brown alumnus, having graduated in 1995.1 After graduation, despite receiving high salary offers from traditional banks and consulting firms, he chose to work in sustainability and agricultural rights.1 His career has spanned various roles in sustainability, finance, and entrepreneurship:

  1. He worked at Cargill, where he advocated for fair prices for farmers and protected vulnerable populations from food insecurity.1
  2. In 2018, he became head of the finance leadership board at Indigo, a startup focused on food distribution.1
  3. He co-founded EarthAcre with Viraj Sikand '17 to support environmental conservation and restoration.14
  4. He has also served as CEO of Cloud Agronomics (now Perennial) and as an entrepreneur in residence at SeaAhead.3

At Brown, Tracy is helping develop curriculum for sustainability-focused classes and collaborating with the Center for Career Exploration to bring more internships and full-time opportunities for students interested in making an environmental impact.1 His appointment is part of IBES' 2023-2028 Strategic Plan to expand student training and professional development opportunities in sustainable finance and investing.3

Tracy's expertise lies in developing financial tools and business models to address long-standing sustainability challenges.3 His work focuses on the intersection of climate, food, finance, and technology.4
