Highlights
Always good to relax a bit, especially in the summer.
This summer, I spent some time in a city that has become one of Europe's coolest places: Málaga, in the south of Spain.
While Málaga is widely known for its laid-back lifestyle, beautiful beaches, and super-friendly people, hearing about Málaga’s remarkable development in recent years might come as a surprise.
The city is vibrant and relaxed at the same time, it´s dynamic, colorful and modern - and it has developed a strong tech ecosystem. Google, Vodafone, Oracle, IBM - they have all recently set up shop here. Málaga TechPark | Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía is home to over 600 businesses, including many startups. I'll have to check out its sport-tech scene soon...
Another topic that always interests me when I visit a place is football (of course). This doesn’t look so good at the moment: In a city and a region with an enormous passion for football, and a great history, the decline of Malaga Club de Futbol S.A.D. in recent years has been painful for many to watch.
Following the investment by Abdullah Al Thani in 2010, the club initially had its glory days, reaching the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals in 2013. But the years since have been difficult, currently they are in LALIGA's second tier.
As Málaga (the city) keeps thriving, question is whether “Málaga” (the club) will be able to keep up. It certainly has the potential to be a top-club in Spain, and with that in Europe.
I believe at the moment Málaga CF might well be Europe’s most intriguing football opportunity.

What’s the purpose of investing in sport technology?
Generally, the primary purpose of investing is to grow your wealth over time and achieve financial goals.
What about other purposes and benefits? What about the bigger picture? What about a positive impact? On who or what?
I believe sport is fundamentally a positive force. Not everything and every day, but overall there is a lot of purpose in sport. It’s about fitness, growth and achievements, fun, winning and losing together…
When I have a look at the sport tech portfolio my partners and I have built together, it is clear to me that our combined portfolio companies positively touch and impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. If we are not in the millions now, we will soon be.
These companies reach beyond professional athletes (although they can be extremely good at helping the best athletes perform and win at the highest level). They're helping many, many people of all ages to be active, build confidence, have fun, learn new skills, better understand their fitness and health, increase their health span - and much more.
Sport technology today is giving people more opportunities to lead healthier, safer, more active and more connected lives. As investors, we have to assume that financing early-stage businesses gives them a chance of being successful, when otherwise they probably would not have this opportunity.
Coming back to the start, to the purpose of investing in our companies:
Are we investing with financial goals in mind?
100%.
Does it help that in doing so, we - all credit goes to the founders - can contribute to achieving A LOT of positive impact?
100%.
So, let’s keep looking out for these fantastic entrepreneurs who make great things happen!
Let’s keep building the good stuff. Together, with a smile!
