Markus Perola

Research Professor at National Institute for Health and Welfare

Dr. Markus Perola is a distinguished professional leading the Quantitative Genetics-group within the Public Health Research Team at the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare in Finland. He specializes in medical genetics, public health, analysis of scientific data, and scientific reviews. Dr. Perola's research primarily focuses on the genetics of common disorders and traits, utilizing various strategies such as genome-wide association studies, linkage mapping in families, high-density SNP maps, and deep sequencing in population-based samples to uncover genetic components of complex traits. He actively engages in numerous large international genetic consortium studies.

Dr. Perola is a highly regarded figure in the field and plays a pivotal role as Chief Scientific Officer of the THL Biobank. He has established and managed the KTL/THL DNA repository for an extended period. Furthermore, he serves as a section editor for the European Journal of Human Genetics, contributing his expertise to the dissemination of research in the field. Dr. Perola is also deeply involved in education, regularly organizing and lecturing at international courses focused on genetic data analysis.

His academic journey includes completing his MD and PhD in Medicine and Genetics at the prestigious University of Helsinki. Dr. Perola previously held positions as a Research Professor, adjunct professor, physician, Senior Scientist, and Visiting Professor at esteemed institutions such as the University of Tartu and Estonian Genome Project. He has also contributed his expertise as a Post-doctoral fellow at UCLA and held roles at the National Public Health Institute in Finland.
