Martha Peters

Director of Public Art, Arts Council of Fort Worth

Martha Peters is a prominent figure in public art, having served as the Director of Public Art for the Arts Council of Fort Worth (previously known as Arts Fort Worth) for over 20 years. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, but considers herself a Texan due to her upbringing in Dallas and Houston. Peters earned her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin and began her career with an emphasis on photography.

Peters' professional journey includes directing public art programs. In 1991, she headed the Austin Art in Public Places program before moving to lead the Fort Worth Public Art program starting in 2003. Under her leadership, nearly 300 public art projects were completed across both cities.1 She has also served on artist selection panels for several major cities and was involved with national organizations like the Public Art Network Council.1

As an artist herself, Martha Peters focuses on lens-based work that poetically interprets landscapes and skies. Her photography often captures clouds due to their ephemeral nature.1 However, as of late 2024, Martha Peters' position as Director of Public Art at Arts Fort Worth was eliminated amid budget struggles.4 Despite this change, she remains active in promoting public art through various roles and initiatives.23
