Roblox partnering with Shopify to offer integrated commerce makes a ton of sense:
The partnership was just announced during the Roblox developer conference.
Roblox is much more than a game. It's establishing itself as one of the key internet browsers for younger consumers.
Not an internet made up of flat 2D interfaces with buttons and forms, but of 3D immersive spaces.
For the past year they've expanded social and communications features. Smart efforts to keep users on the platform and establish itself as centre of gravity for their users' online activities.
Where attention goes, commerce follows.
With this integration the platform takes a huge step from attention marketplace to full-on economy.
I've written before about growing the platform economy via import/export, and this is a great example of just that.
I'll be curious to see what business model Roblox attaches to this.
Roblox is looking as strong as ever. Here are 4 keys for continued growth in 2024 and beyond:
Quick recap on the scale of this platform:
• 70 million daily active users • Revenue is up almost 40% year-over-year • If a country, it would be the ≈155th largest economy • Currently doing 5.3 billion engagement hours/month (with a 20% annual growth rate)
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝟰 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺'𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵:
🌎 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 US/Canada still make up a significant part of bookings (lots of ground to cover in Europe and Asia)
🙋♀️ 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Roblox is putting a lot into 17+ experiences. Retaining users as they age is key to compound user growth. Older users also monetize better.
🎁 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹/𝗼𝗳𝗳-𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 Import/export is a major growth lever for any economy. If Roblox can become an immersive online hub for commerce, it will become significantly bigger. This will also naturally drive a bigger ad economy on the platform.
💬 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 It's not a game. It's a high-fidelity social network. Adding more features to enable users to build and maintain a social connections is a key retention mechanic.
What will be most important for Roblox to continue its growth?
