Highlights
Sometimes the category you're competing in can feel broken.
Symptoms: crushing BigTech policy changes, disruptive regulatory updates, "the end is coming" news cycles, problems that seem impossible to fix, PR wars that perplex prospects, unsustainable value props, rampant rumours.
Finding a focussed growth direction amongst the chaos can appear insurmountable.
This is exactly what Marty Krátký-Katz and his team at Blockthrough pulled off.
The space they were operating in -- ad blocking solutions for publishers -- was totally broken and chaotic.
Yet, they found a growth path and sold the company at a valuation a little under $100m CAD in 2022.
How do I know the category was chaotic?
Because I experienced it first-hand, in my competing startup.
I sat down with Marty to reflect on the chaos, and, identify the core factors that made a difference and were critical to Blockthrough’s success.
Whilst the ‘who, what, and why’ details of this story are specific to a niche adtech category, the core principles are transferable to just about any category.
That was? Mindset. The effective application of critical thinking. First principles stuff.
For Blockthrough, that meant:
👀 Taking a step back. Approach with a “fresh set of eyes”. Bias creates blind spots ⚠️ Category chaos is mostly noise. Identify the few core factors that matter 🧩 Piece together a value proposition hypothesis from the core factors identified 🗣️ Systematically call out and challenge tacit assumptions that everybody else believes to be true 🔄 Reorienting to serve a different party in the value-chain
What emerged from this was a radically differentiated value proposition that Blockthrough was able to position resonantly in the minds of prospects and grow extremely quickly.

I unpacked Blockthrough’s journey in the below post. This is an objective breakdown, through my lens as a competitor in the same space. 👇
RIES | Positioning Strategy & Consulting, who I joined this year, has directly helped thousands of companies develop and fine-tine their Positioning.
What's equally special, though, is when you encounter a founder who has read books published by RIES co-founders Al Ries and Laura Ries and executed the positioning principles declared within them skilfully and achieved huge success.
One such entrepreneur is Scott Miller, founder of Apogee Entertainment, whose games have sold over $2 billion commercially.
Apogee achieved breakout success in the 90s with titles like Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem 3D, Max Payne in the 00s, and is still going strong today with its most recent release: Turbo Overkill.
Scott credits executing the Positioning principles declared in Al and Laura's books as a key factor in his success as a founder.
I interviewed him to learn how.👇
