Martin Hadland
Founder & MD at Student First Group
Martin Hadland is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Student First Group (SFG), a London-based specialist advisor, investor, developer, and asset manager in the student accommodation and property sectors.13 He founded SFG in 2018 with Richard Gabelich.1 Their aim is to use their collective experience to facilitate transactions and generate innovative solutions, advising on both off-campus/direct let property and on-campus infrastructure partnership models to maximize the student experience.1
Hadland has over 30 years of experience working for and advising universities, property brokers, and advisors.2 He advises leading universities, investors, and operators on all aspects of student accommodation strategy and problem-solving.2
Before founding SFG, Martin was the Commercial Director for Campus Living Villages (CLV) UK, where he managed commercial and asset management functions, overseeing university partnership bids and transactions. During his time at CLV, he added 2,800 beds to the portfolio and a pipeline of over 4,000 beds.2 Prior to CLV, Hadland worked for six years at real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle, consulting with universities on strategic reviews of estate portfolios, supporting disposals, and reviewing procurement options for new accommodation. He was the lead consultant on student accommodation projects that delivered over 10,000 beds at a total capital cost exceeding £500m.2
Earlier in his career, Martin spent 15 years as a Director of Estates in the higher education sector, working at City University, Brunel University, and Middlesex University.2 He led the project to sell long-term leasehold interests in the halls of residence while at City University. At Middlesex University, he led the financing, design, and construction of 6 new halls of residence totaling 1,500 beds.2
Currently, Martin serves on the Estates Committee of the Royal College of Music, is a Trustee of Queen Alexandra House, and is a regular conference speaker.2
