We're delighted to be recognized as a provider in the first Contextual Fintech Map, published by Viola FinTech.

What is contextual finance exactly?

There has been a lot of buzz about embedded finance and this report does a good job of calling out what needs to be solved for the next generation to be successful.

Namely, delivering financial services not just as an additional product you can buy from a vendor you already do business with (such as Apple offering a credit card), but delivering financial services within the context of another activity and transaction.

A simple example of that: offering car insurance to Uber drivers when they’re onboarding to the platform.

We’re still in the very early stages of working out embedded finance propositions for commercial lending, which is far more complex.

The first generation focused on Banking as a Service software providers using licensed bank providers at the back end. But the banks didn't have any transparency into the end customers and so they weren't able to do the same level of compliance checking activities with those customers.

It was obvious that was going to lead to disaster and what's happened is the regulator has shut down a lot of those, because they're rightly saying it's creating systemic risk in the financial system.

At Trade Ledger™ Ledger, we're not doing any lending ourselves. We're just providing infrastructure that enables embedded lending.

We think the next generation of embedded lending is actually a two sided marketplace that connects up the lenders directly with the channels that have the customers. The context is the channel.

Our infrastructure will enable the banks to do the same level of onboarding and compliance checking that they always do while giving them an additional distribution channel.

Why we do what we do at Trade Ledger™ Ledger: The IFC - International Finance Corporation estimates that 65 million firms, or 40% of formal micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in developing countries, have an unmet financing need of $5.2 trillion every year, which is equivalent to 1.4 times the current level of the global MSME lending.

These firms play a major role in most economies, representing about 90% of businesses and more than 50% of employment worldwide. Most struggle to get working capital funding from banks, because they don't have the traditional kinds of data banks require, and archaic origination and decisioning processes at the bank make it costly to serve this segment.

By bringing in new data sources and speeding the application to decisioning process from weeks to days, we're helping banks like HSBC, which are using our origination platform in 10 countries, better serve SMEs and close the global working capital finance gap.
