Just in case you didn’t know most wild caught salmon are farmed in hatcheries and then ranched at sea. Hatcheries have been used to maintain superabundant stocks created by First Nations then damaged by European settlers for hundreds of years but their ability to sustain ancient genetic clades has been problematic. Politics plays an important part along with technical (e.g., dams), social and economic aspects making these fish one of the most highly studied social-ecological-technical systems of all time.

Fun video about another species "in the wrong place" complete with dramatic music and emotive terminology (aggressive, invader, insatiable appetite, devour everything). A biologist describes a "really frightening" encounter with a large crab. Like many valuable food species, they were transported and planted away from their home range - in this case by the Russians. Potential damages are, as is typical, assumed from previous studies and assessed using overly simplistic feeding studies (similar experiments used preserved fishing baits). Scientists really need to start using aquaculture lab style feeding studies. Benefits of this invasive include a valuable fishery and genetic reservoir for depleted Alaskan stocks.
