Thrilled to be celebrating our friends at Mural with these commemorative Category Design medallions!

Survey benchmarks similar to this one are found on taller peaks and mountain tops around the world, often showing up as metal disks embedded in rock. They provide latitude, longitude and orthometric height and give surveyors a point of reference for validating geographic data.

In addition to looking very cool, we like the parallels between category design and mountain climbing. Particularly the idea that each category benchmark establishes a reference point and becomes part of the topography of the broader category landscape.

Congratulations on the huge accomplishment of launching the category of Collaborative Intelligence. Now let's go climb the next mountain!

VCs and CEOs have been asking us for years what type of engagements Play Bigger offered for early, pre-series A, stage companies. Our response had always been the same - read the book, view the resourses on our website, and we wish you a ton of success.

Until we stopped to consider, what if we could tailor an offering specifically suited for early stage companies? Ones that still had work to do on product/market fit but had drank the Kool Aid on creating category but needed expert guidance and feedback to get team alignment and launch them on their Category Design journey. Enter Play Bigger “Therapy.”

The incredible co-founders of The Ambassador Platform, Nik Higgins and George Olsen, contacted us with the same growing pains we had heard for years. They had created a tech platform enabling universities to recruit students. The methodology in our book resonated with them, they had taken a first crack at their Problem statement, Category Name and POV but after multiple iterations, none of it felt right. There was more opportunity then they were capturing. TAP became our first Therapy client.

We dug into the work they had already done and quickly found they were focusing on the wrong problem – the students who were trying to understand the experience various colleges provided, not the universities who were financially motivated to convey the experiences they delivered. When trying to decide which problem to focus on, always follow the money. And in their case, that was the universities, not the students. Their first draft POV was two pages long and yet still didn’t instill the sense of urgency around the unmet need of the category. We worked through their Ecosystem, identified the top partners, and invited them to Lightning Strike with clear tracks for each.

Following our sessions, the team huddled and a month later launched their new category – Experience Communication Management complete with an updated website and company name. We are thrilled with their progress, honored to be part of their journey, and will be cheering for them every step of the way.

“Embarking on the category design process was certainly something. I'm not going to pretend it was easy, particularly for a company of our size. However, the impact it has had has been pretty remarkable. It forced me and my Co-founder, George Olesen, to think really deeply about our product and ask very complex questions about what it actually is and what it actually does. This led to some late nights (and countless coffees), but we came out of the process being able to describe The Ambassador Platform in a register that had been previously inaccessible to us. Category design isn't for faint hearted founders, but it is for ambitious founders - the ones that aren't satisfied by having the intellectual parameters of their company defined by someone else. The conversations we had with Al and Mary helped us to sharpen up our initial thoughts and ideas.”  Nik Higgins, Co-founder & CGO
