Highlights
Back when it cost significant money to get your words out there (printing presses, postage, salaries, paper, etc), publishers worked to be interesting. The most interesting gained an audience and could win a market for vast profit.
When we create content for marketing/sales/web the same possibility is there. But to have an outsize win, we need an outsize voice and content. When this happens, we can win rapidly. When we stay in the same narrowlane as our peers, it’s often boring, missable and struggles to perform.
A great example of this is my great colleague and former competitor Katie Martell. She launched “The Best Newsletter in the World” 61 weekly issues ago, and as I furiously unsubscribe from time wasters in my inbox, I enthusiastically crack open her crisp, amusing, informative and challenging digest.
A year ago there was no newsletter, no website, no official Katie Martell. She’s a self-started, self-promoted actual thought leader who has brought and lived up to her own hype. This is the second time I’ve talked about Katie because I’m so damned impressed, and honestly, I want to read more newsletters, just up the interesting factor. Look at Katie for a great example of what interesting looks like https://lnkd.in/djBSGTw.
I run a regular analysis of marketing salaries by gender using Payscale data. The only category where there is 100% parity is Marketing Automation because salary sharing is routine in this new, gender-balanced, high demand field.
