On Day 1 of the Fireflies NorCal Tour, Lindsay Coursley pulled his bike alongside mine, and asked me to take 5 deep breaths in with him and five deep breaths out. I think he could feel the anxiety buzzing off of me as I readied myself for something that felt completely impossible just weeks before. After I calmed down, he asked me what I was grateful for. “You,” I said. And I meant it with every fiber of my being.

For the past few months, I’ve been training to ride with the Fireflies Cycling Club in Northern California for 500+ miles of “Type 2 Fun” with purpose. If you work in entertainment or advertising, chances are, you’ve heard of the Fireflies. But for those who haven’t—the Fireflies are a group of cyclists who ride each year to raise money for cancer research with the City of Hope. Over the course of my career, I’ve worked with, been lead by (Alastair Green), and partnered with a number of Fireflies. This year, my former creative partner Davide Vismara asked me to join them. And after four, consistent years of brutal, personal experiences with cancer, I knew that it was time.

Over the summer and throughout this tour, I’ve learned more about myself, my grief, leadership, community and the importance of having a growth mindset than I have in the past several years. “You are stronger than you think.” “You can do more than you know.” It’s an honor to wear this jersey and to be a part of something so profoundly meaningful and purposeful.

Yesterday, after 6 grueling days of all kinds of weather, challenges and fun (it is a whole lot of fun, too), I finished the ride with tears in my eyes. Grateful for the connection. Grateful to be a part of a mission that has changed so many lives. Another Firefly put it eloquently—we trade a few days of pain on our bikes for a few more years someone can spend with the people they love.

These are people I love.

Please consider donating to our mission.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our inaugural Bots & Booze speaker series. I had a lot of fun waxing poetic about the intersection of artificial intelligence and creativity! I hope you did, too.
