Please don't tell me I look great for my age. Thank you.
I received this article from three women yesterday!! Thanks to each of you. As author Sydney Loney writes:
"Women at the height of their careers are suddenly finding themselves judged—and found wanting—for having the audacity to age. Studies, and reports from women in every facet of the workforce, show that women over 50 are being passed over for promotion, face shrinking salaries and have a harder time getting hired for new jobs. The pressure to appear younger is exhausting, expensive and unavoidable."
Ten thousand times YES. I am at the height of my career and...
In spite of my best efforts to age naturally and embrace the beauty inherent in this -- I recently went to a clinic to find out what they would do to "fix" my aging face. Letting my hair go grey was easy. Watching gravity and decreased collagen change my face - much harder.
I felt sad to be there. I did not see myself as this person. And in that statement, NO JUDGMENT to those who do and always did see themselves as this person. Many of you are my very good friends. And I love you.
When your friends and family, who can afford to have work done, have work done -- you start to feel old next to the very people you thought you'd grow old with.
Recently, I heard myself telling my daughter I feel like an "old hag." She said, what's an old hag? I said Google it. She did. She was not impressed with me.
WHO AM I? Who says this? Who says this to her daughter after years of no fashion magazines in the house. Who thinks this? Not me. But yes, me.
Here's what I found out:
Is it expensive? Yes. They recommended filler. 6 Sculptra vials within a year: $1000+HST per vial or 8 Dermal Fillers and 1-2 Sculptra vials for maintenance: $750+HST per filler and $1000+HST per Sculptra vial.
Does it hurt? Yes. They suggest a 3-4 on that weird pain scale. I can assure you that your 3 is definitely my 6. (I'm pain averse!)
Do I have to keep doing it once I start? Yes. See maintenance schedule above.
And, the doctor told me, once you've done your face -- you will want to do your neck -- which is surgery. Even if you insist your neck doesn't bother you -- it will -- once you've done your face. Approximate cost $6-8,000.00
Here's the thing. I want to tell you I will never do this. I want to tell you I will be brave and strong and love myself as I am. And that's my goal. That's what I'm trying to do.
And, I accept that I may fail to embrace aging gracefully. I may succumb to the pressures of a youth obsessed society. I expect to need to keep earning a living for at least another ten years. I want to keep working until I can't. I love my work.
Right now, "fixing my face" is not affordable for me. I have more important things to pay for... like University. But as the saying goes, never say never.
