Super excited to begin my journey with MileIQ! Great team, great product, and a bright future ahead! Thank you Andrey, Dan, and Chuck 🙏. Let’s do this.
You are not your job. This is the ultimate conclusion I came to after parting ways with Metromile in the middle of 2022. Seeing a lot of very tenured folks from Google and other companies post about their layoff stories was a bit triggering and I wanted to share some more about my second longest stint at a place that will always be very special to me. I spent 7+ years at Metromile - a startup offering pay-per-mile insurance. Drive less, save more! I've been told that's a long time at a startup - well it was fun. I started as the Director of Product Design and left as the SVP of Product and Design. I'm proud of what the company accomplished and what our teams achieved. I learned a ton, led the design of numerous zero-to-one products, two app redesigns, was a member of the executive team, contributed to and experienced going public, influenced and directly impacted company culture, informed hiring strategies, helped with internal comms, defined product strategy, evolved our product development methodologies, helped with the Lemonade acquisition, the list goes on - I got to wear so many fricking hats and relished in it. It was some of the best work of my life. And some of the most fun I've had working. The experience was invaluable and that is for me to take with me. The relationships and friendships I formed are still there and going strong. It didn't end the way I wanted it to. But I've come to peace with that. Because at the end of the day you are not your job. Your job doesn't define you. It took me a bit to come to that realization. In many ways I had woven Metromile so much into the core of who I was day-to-day that I took the initial loss and separation extremely hard. I wanted to review our roadmaps, have 1:1s with my team members, discuss our future product strategy - I missed it immensely. I missed and felt for my team. I bled #mmblue (#0DC0C9 - at one point). But slowly, each day I was able to come to terms with everything a little more. Once I was able to realize that my job didn't define who I was I could reflect on all of the amazing stuff that I led, contributed to, and impacted. For everyone who has recently been part of a layoff you have been given an opportunity. An opportunity to reflect on your time at your previous employer, to reflect on what you want to do next, and to learn and grow from your experiences. I urge you to take whatever time you have - a day, a week, a month - to reflect before you jump back in for the next thing.
Shout out to my Metromile family from past and present. And to Miles the bear. 🙏 Thanks for reading. Stay strong. Be positive. #youarenotyourjob #layoffs #career #opportunity
