What it means to be an effective Leader continues to evolve rapidly. With the emergence of "soft skills" as being a necessity vs. a nice-to-have, there is one fundamental people skill that, to me, transcends all of the others: Listening.

Every time I've been brought in to an organization to lead a team or department I would fairly quickly conduct a Listening Tour. I'd schedule 1:1 time with an intentional mix of team members and new colleagues, being sure to prioritize more junior members as much as those in more senior roles. I'd use a uniform set of questions to help facilitate the conversation, and I'd always end with the same question: "If you were me, what would you focus your efforts on?"

This fairly simple exercise would provide me with tons of valuable insight to help build a strategic action plan around, but more importantly, it helped establish a culture of listening "from the top". The Listening Tour is now a frequently recommended step in North Star Coaching and Consulting, LLC's Sales Leadership curriculum.

There's a lot to juggle as a Leader, but whenever I slowed down a bit and listened to my team, I always felt more confident about how to best take us forward.

Over the past couple of months I’ve been leading quite a few 2023 Revenue Goal Setting and Sales Action Planning sessions with my clients. Here are a few things that have been pretty consistent across the board:

  1. Revenue goal setting is scary.
  2. Having a trusted outlet for sharing your anxieties helps.
  3. Establishing a Sales Action Plan that clearly breaks down big revenue goals into smaller, measurable actions makes everything feel far less scary.
  4. Accountability structures are absolutely essential.
  5. Revenue goal setting is still scary!

Leading a company is a tremendous honor, but can also be incredibly isolating for many. I’ve coached dozens of Founders and CEOs, and in many sessions I have visibly seen the stress lift off of them when they are able to share their fears and concerns with me. When that happens, I know we can build and execute a plan that is more than just big numbers and tasks.

If you’re a company or team leader and are feeling like you could use some help putting a real plan in place to hit your 2023 goals, or even just to connect with someone that "gets it", please reach out!
