Matthew Gray, also known as Matt Gray, is a seasoned professional in the American opera theatre scene, currently serving as the General Director at American Opera Projects (AOP) since 2019.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Directing from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Matt transitioned from indie film and theatre in New York City to AOP in 2003, where he steadily climbed the ranks from Office Manager to Producing Director over a decade.

Matt Gray brings a unique perspective to opera, drawing on his background in film and theatre to develop AOP projects that resonate with new audiences by incorporating elements of popular entertainment and modern storytelling.

As a director, Matt has helmed various opera productions, including As One across different opera houses, Darkling at Center City Opera Theater, and opera workshops at AOP like AbSynth, Numinous City, and Semmelweis.

Apart from operas, Matt has directed a range of shows in NYC, such as concerts, cabarets, and plays, showcasing his versatility in the performing arts.

His creative endeavors extend to playwriting and filmmaking, with works like the serialized play Penny Dreadful and the indie horror anthology film The Moose Head Over the Mantel.
