This is my favourite picture of Lu Xiaojun - one I’d show to every client in my clinic. Lu’s using a very interesting abdominal technique, co-ordinating his breath, pelvic rotation and core muscles to (temporarily) remove the curvature of his lower back.

This lets the load bypass his back, connecting straight to his pelvis. If we’re interested in pain-free, healthy movement, we can all learn something from Lu.

Which is to say, lifting technique is definitely a thing. We can change the position of our body, to change where the force of movement goes.

What we can’t do however, is reduce injuries at work by teaching ‘lifting techniques’. The research is very clear (as are WorkSafe Victoria & SafeWork NSW in their position papers on 'how to lift' training). And if you look at some of the medical literature, you’ll see that this type of 'common-sense' training even has the potential to do harm.

One week to go until the next BodyGuide industry session! Be there or be square(ly lacking Lu Xiaojun’s wisdom).

Happy moving y’all Matt
