Matthew Lloyd has had a remarkable career journey, showcasing his dedication and expertise within both the civilian and military sectors. Beginning his professional career in 1992, Matthew worked in a variety of roles culminating in a position as an Insolvency Senior at Grant Thornton. His decision to join the Royal Navy in 1999 marked a new chapter in his life, as he transitioned from civilian roles to serving his country in various capacities.
In the Royal Navy, Matthew completed a myriad of military and professional training courses. He had the unique opportunity to serve aboard a Brazilian Navy training ship for three months, enriching his experience and understanding of international naval operations. His first appointment as Deputy Logistics Officer aboard HMS KENT, a Type 23 frigate, afforded him the chance to engage in deployments across critical regions, including the Northern Arabian Gulf, Horn of Africa, Indian Ocean, and the Mediterranean. This role set a solid foundation for the subsequent positions he would hold in the Royal Navy.
A significant milestone in Matthew’s career occurred when he transferred to submarines, emphasizing his adaptability and commitment to serving in diverse operational environments. As Logistics Officer of HMS SPARTAN and HMS SCEPTRE, he navigated challenging deployments to the South Atlantic, Horn of Africa, and the Northern Arabian Gulf, further honing his logistical and strategic capabilities in high-stakes environments.
Matthew's commitment to professional development led him to successfully complete the Royal Navy's Intermediate Command and Staff Course, which equipped him with advanced skills needed for strategic roles within military operations. Following this accomplishment, he served as Assistant Adjutant of the United Kingdom Landing Force Command Support Group Royal Marines (now 30 Commando (IX)), where he achieved a remarkable feat by completing the Cold Weather Warfare Course in the Arctic region of Norway and a deployment to Helmand Province in Afghanistan. These experiences enriched his leadership skills and provided in-depth knowledge of joint operational capabilities.
Matthew's varied military career also included important roles at the Navy Command Headquarters, where he contributed significantly as a member of the Resource and Plans team. He also acted as the Coordinator for a Portuguese 2* Admiral at NATO Joint Force Command in Lisbon, showcasing his ability to bridge international defense relations and strategic planning.
In 2010, under the sponsorship of the Royal Navy, Matthew attended the renowned Cranfield School of Management, where he completed a full-time MBA program, further enhancing his management capabilities and leadership strategies.
After a distinguished service career, Matthew retired from the Royal Navy in 2016, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. He relocated to Portugal, where he channeled his passion for the arts into establishing the Calliope Theatre Company, which offers professional and educational English-language theatre experiences to schools. This initiative not only demonstrates his versatility but also his commitment to enriching the educational landscape through the performing arts.
