Got to join the #DNC fun today courtesy of Will Marshall and Progressive Policy Institute, offering my thoughts on how companies and policymakers together can create more great career options for high school students not going right to a 4-year degree. Former US Rep Tim Ryan led conversations with Senator Michael Bennet, Rep. Nikki Budzinski, and a panel of myself, Ryan Craig Jason Gaulden and Karin Norington-Reaves to clarify the way forward on dramatic opportunity expansion in the US economy.

The most important points I heard: 💠 Students leaving high school should have non-degree options available for a next step that have strong likelihood of leading to living wage careers--this is something we all agree on but haven't yet made reality 💠 We've made a ton of progress over the last decade expanding apprenticeship--we delivered on Pres. Obama's goal of doubling apprenticeship!--but there's a lot more room to grow 💠 Federal and state policy can make this easier or harder 💠 We should be honest about programs that simply aren't working to deliver economic mobility to learners and jobseekers, and stop funneling public funds to them (Sen. Bennet offered refreshing clarity on this point) 💠 We'd move faster if more companies did what JPMorganChase does, leveraging apprenticeship for talent sourcing, advocating for apprenticeship-supportive policies, and investing in organizations expanding the model.
