Matthew Shindell

Curator of Planetary Sciences, National Air & Space Museum

Matthew Shindell is a historian of science and technology with a focus on Earth and planetary exploration and the research programs driving such expeditions. He currently serves as the Space History Curator at the National Air and Space Museum, where he co-hosts the museum's podcast, AirSpace. Shindell earned a Ph.D. in History of Science and Science Studies from UC San Diego and holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa.

His educational background includes a Ph.D. in History of Science, Science Studies from UC San Diego, an MS in Biology and Society, History of Planetary Science from Arizona State University, an MFA in Creative Writing, Poetry, Book Arts from the University of Iowa, and a BS in Biology, Biology and Society from Arizona State University.

In addition to his current role at the Smithsonian Institution, Matthew Shindell previously held positions as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard University, a Postdoctoral Researcher and Teaching Fellow at the University of Southern California, an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UC San Diego, a Haas Predoctoral Fellow at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, a Teacher at Summer Discovery, a Graduate Teaching Assistant at UC San Diego, a Special Collections Graduate Assistant at UC San Diego, and an Intern at AAAS.
