Highlights
Please see below my thoughts about what occurred this past weekend, reported in USA Today and the Palm Beach Daily News:
“The attempted assassination of President Trump was a terrifying episode for our country and the world. It could have been much worse, and I am so relieved and happy that the president is safe. We also need to remember that someone was killed..and others seriously injured in what should have been a celebration of our democratic process. I truly hope this moment will bring about a reevaluation of the current tone of our politics and get us to shift to a much more positive and forward-thinking place as a nation. I have spent my entire career traveling the world, and we all need to recognize just how lucky we all are to be Americans and hold ourselves to a higher standard.”

Last Tuesday, members of our community arrived in Georgetown, Guyana for Concordia's 2024 Amazonas Summit. A few of our guests were welcomed into our first excursion hosted by the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, ActionINVEST Caribbean Inc., and the EXXONMOBIL FOUNDATION with an enriching activity. Throughout the excursion, we were able to meet with local female business entrepreneurs and learn more about the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women’s program, which supports and mentors local women entrepreneurs in Guyana. A special thank you to Founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women and Concordia Leadership Council Member, Cherie Blair CBE (Cherie Booth K.C.) hosting us and educating everyone on how entrepreneurship is a form of empowerment for these women.
Later in the evening, President Irfaan Ali invited all participants to his residence for a welcome dinner, educating us further on the great initiatives he has implemented during his term to protect the Amazon rainforest.
Since 2008, Guyana has been the first developing country to produce a Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), maintaining one of the world’s most intact tropical forests. Guyana is committed to investing in clean energy and stimulating low-carbon growth, protecting its rainforest against climate change and biodiversity loss, and aligning with global climate goals. The country aims to double the total protected areas to 16% within the next 18 months, which he announced for the first time at the summit last week, and a further move to 25% by 2027 on the way to 30% by 2030, otherwise known as the 30 by 30 project.
President Ali, thank you once again for hosting us and educating everyone on the country and its plans for a better future. It was a terrific way to start the 2024 Amazonas Summit.
