Matthew Witt

Associate Professor in Natural Environment

Dr. Matthew Witt is a dedicated researcher with a focus on marine vertebrate ecology, including foraging behavior, habitat-use, and population assessment. He also delves into human-wildlife conflict. His research involves marine species like turtles, cetaceans, sharks, seals, and seabirds, employing various remote data collection technologies like satellite tracking, archival data loggers, and earth observation remote sensing. Matthew's expertise lies in marine spatial ecology, renewable energies, remote sensing, statistical modeling (in R), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), programming (MATLAB & Python), marine vertebrate surveying, and satellite telemetry of marine species. He holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Exeter, an MRes in Marine Biology from the University of Plymouth, and an MSc in Oceanography from the University of Southampton. He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in Natural Environment at the University of Exeter, having previously worked as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the same university and held roles in management and bookselling at Waterstones and Dillons the Bookstore, respectively.
