Germany has over 2,000 cities, many with hundreds of thousands or even millions of citizens. Our community managed to get our tiny campus town onto the German #Monopoly board. 🧐🎩🦉

This is one of my favorite #WHUspirit 💗 stories: In 2018, Hasbro initiated a big project.

Germany should vote on which cities should get picked for the #Germany edition of their famous board game - and which spot they would claim.

As the dominant social media platform of the time, they used votes on #Facebook to determine the necessary ranking. 👍❤️😂😯😢😡

Obviously, this was a great #MarketingStunt to get people all around Germany excited about and invested in this Monopoly edition.

People were able to vote up their favorite 300 big cities ("Großstädte"). Big cities are typically defined as having more than 100,000 citizens. 🔼

As the absolute number of votes was the deciding factor, smaller cities had a disadvantage. Yet, some smaller big cities managed to coordinate better, and #Goettingen and #Bielefeld ended up getting the most prestigious streets ("Schlossallee" and "Parkstrasse"). 💰🛣

But, Hasbro stuck with good sportsmanship practices and introduced a #wildcard! 🤝

One small town with less than 25,000 citizens would get the chance to be on the board!

#Vallendar has only around 9,000 citizens. It's officially classified as "small small town" ("Kleine Kleinstadt“) by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development. 🤏

But it is also the birthplace of WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. 🦉

When there was the chance to nominate a small town, dozens of #WHU students and alums got active and flooded the comment sections. I looked at the original Facebook post and saw nominations by Dr. Felix Röllecke, Daniel Deutsch, Daniel Hanemann, Niels Fritze, Ivo Wissler, and many others. 🗨🗨🗨

After Vallendar was picked as a finalist, more than 5,000 citizens of Vallendar and WHU alums voted together to get Vallendar in first place (at that time, WHU only had around 5,000 alums). 🏆

All WHU WhatsApp groups were activated, emails were sent around, and community members in #Berlin, #Frankfurt, #Düsseldorf, #Munich, etc. gave their vote to Vallendar.

I'd actually be curious how many of them previously helped their big current hometowns get a good positioning on the board. 😅

The rest is history. 📖 The game was released in 2018 and I bought my first copy of the game.

The next copy, I found online and bought last week. And we'll find a way to auction it off or raffle it at our next #Homecoming in beautiful Vallendar. 💖

A nice pitch deck doesn't make a nice business case. You have to understand your unit economics. And maybe get creative... - €4m funding announcement for #WHU InsureTech venture. 🦉💸🤝

Creating a viable solution for a customer problem is not only an exercise in creativity, product design, UI, etc. 📱

It is also an exercise in making the distribution of your solution work, producing economies of scale, and increasing the revenue per customer over time.

One typical framework to look at is "#CLV > #CAC" 🤓

Your Customer Lifetime Value should be bigger than your Customer Acquisition Costs.

CACs can be underestimated entirely when you get started, especially if you don't have experience in your industry. 💰

In the FinTech space, for example, you have to pay 30€, 50€, 100€, sometimes even more to get a new customer onto your platform. 😰

The true CACs can even be higher because many of your customers never turn into "real," profitable customers. They use your bank account only as a 2nd or 3rd account. Their salaries flow somewhere else. The people getting access to the stock market via your service never really get active as traders.

So, what can you do to get your invested CACs back? 🤔

Of course, you can try to incentivize people to prioritize your service, improve the UX, and make people more comfortable traders. 💗

But you can also try to #upsell and #crosssell each customer to increase their revenue potential. 🙌

Here, Embea enters the stage.

Co-founded by WHU alum Dr. Johannes Becher (MLB 2010) together with Dmitry Muzhikov and Leopold Jedina, the #Berlin-based startup is active in the #EmbeddedInsurance space. ✍️

Their #B2B customers can very easily integrate Embea into their own websites and platforms to offer their users custom life (and other) insurance.

📖 Imagine this: I'm sitting on the couch, setting up an #ETF savings plan in my neobroker because I recently became a parent. My partner took a career break to look after the kid. They make a huge personal concession for us and might get more and more financially dependent on me. I start coughing like crazy - it's this time of year, I guess. A thought pops into my head: "What if I get sick and something happens to me? My spouse and kid couldn't keep up their way of life." Suddenly, a window opens in the #neobroker. Based on my customer data, they offer me #LifeInsurance. I generate an offer...

According to EMBA their B2B customers can generate up to 480€ of additional revenue per user this way. 😲

At no additional effort, because Embea takes care of all administrative and service steps connected to this additional transaction.

Embea just raised €4m in #SeedFunding from Atlantic Labs and astoryaVC - in a market environment with a decrease of 84% in total investment in European #InsurTech companies in 2023. 💪

Congrats, Dr. Johannes, Naum, and the whole team! 👏

What are the craziest customer acquisition costs you have heard about? 💡
