Highlights
Are you reputation banking?
I do a fair amount of crisis response work, and preparing crisis communications plans is hugely valuable. However, more than ever, building brand equity and living your values is crucial to your overall crisis preparation strategy.
Why?
The trust and relationships you build today with your audiences and stakeholders will be your strongest defence tomorrow. It's not just about having a response plan ready for when things go wrong but about consistently demonstrating your values and commitment to quality and integrity.
When a crisis hits, it will confirm or challenge people's perceptions of your brand. If their existing trust is strong, your audience is more likely to support you through the turbulence. However, if there's scepticism, any adverse event can spiral out of control, causing significant damage.
Moreover, criminals and bad actors are always on the lookout for weaknesses. Could a strong brand reputation, with fewer vulnerabilities to exploit, make an organisation less susceptible to misinformation campaigns or even cyber-attacks? Something to consider for sure when we do probability/impact risk scoring exercises.
Preparation isn't just about what you plan to do in a crisis; it's about the trust and equity you build every day.
I'm watching the global Microsoft issue unfold today to see how the communications response supports customers and the general public. It's a trusted global brand so should have plenty of reputation currency in the bank, but a crisis on this scale will have a profound impact on the brand value.

How do you keep up to date with your professional development?
I've been a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations for 15 years. During that time the association has supported me with brilliant learning opportunities and the chance to hear from industry colleagues who so often generously share their knowledge. The association helps to keep me up to date with news and views, its code of ethics provides a guiding framework and I am without a shadow of a doubt a better professional for it.
Thanks also must go to CIPR Channel Islands for the wonderful local network and all of the other CIPR groups like CIPR Crisis Communications Network and CIPR Inside.
