Hypothetical situation: You get a new job and before you start you do loads of research on the role and what you'll be doing, so you're very prepared, but you can't put any of that into practice until your first day.

The company promised that your manager world give you on-the-job training on day one, but she's actually extremely busy and nobody has time to answer your questions or show you what to do. 😬

You're trying to figure it out, and getting pretty frustrated because you can't make any progress, when HR arrives to say you'll be fired and replaced if you don't get up to speed within 48 hours. 🤯

Clearly a bad place to work, no?

For a huge number of mothers in Ireland who attempt to take on the 'job' of breastfeeding their baby, that's their experience. They're sold a dream, promised support and then let down when they try to learn this new skill.

(I worked on this project and did the graphics so feel zero shame plugging it on a professional network 👍🏻)

So many true things in this article. 🙏

"But the myth must be punctured! It gives cover for the hypnotic exhaustion of architectural education and the exploitation of architectural practice by supporting the idea that architects are creative geniuses the world is blessed to have; rather than, for the most part, workers carrying out mundane tasks and emotional labor."

"Resetting architects’ expectations about the nature of their work, as workers, will galvanize them to claim their due rights and compensation for their labor, and end the cycle of abuses of power that justifies unpaid internships and uncompensated overtime (‘I had to do it as a young architect, so today’s young architects should too’). All architectural workers – architects and non-architects – stand to benefit as a consequence."
