Public Service Announcement:

For anyone that is planning a move in the near future...whether it's local or out of state, please learn from my experience.

We recently moved from Chicago to Charlotte. While researching moving companies, I started seeing FB ads for "cross country moves starting at $1150"....naturally I was intrigued. I clicked on the link, filled out the form and started receiving phone calls from moving brokers almost immediately.

Given that I was laid off in November, I was looking for ways to cut costs on this move. Everyone I spoke to quoted me almost half what the more reputable van lines quoted me. I decided to go with one that appeared to have good reviews.

Long story short: the move ended up costing us 2x as much as they quoted me. We only found that out the day the movers showed up. The movers showed up 3 days late with a box truck and 2 guys to load our 4 bedroom/4 story house. They gave me a runaround each and every day that I called trying to find out when our stuff was going to be delivered (I was told 1-7 days based on the distance).....it ended up being almost 2 weeks.

On top of being twice as much as we expected (and significantly more than the quotes I received from the reputable van lines), we also had to pay extra days in rent, hotel costs, dining out expenses and lost wages because I work hourly and couldn't work during most of this. We have missing and damaged items that we will be filing a claim for, but I am not confident we will receive anything for them.

The lesson here? DO NOT get sucked into ads that seem to good to be true. Moving brokers give you a quote and push you to put down a deposit so you "don't lose the amazing discounts" and then you end up without any discounts anyhow. They farm the move out to horrible moving companies that need the work. Moving is stressful as it is....pay for the reputable moving companies.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk 😉
